What to Do if You Keep Hearing No from Companies
What to Do if You Keep Hearing No from CompaniesWhat to Do if You Keep Hearing No from Companies When youre on the job hunt and you get hit with Well give you a call, but the call never comes, it can become quite frustrating. Not getting any answer is sometimes mora discouraging than getting a rejection. But in the job-seeking world, you will often find yourself receiving more negative answers, rather than positive ones. The real reason behind it may be related more to the technology that supports the recruiting system, rather than to your overall job skills. The recruiting process has suffered many changes throughout the years, in the hopes of successfully implementing new tools that can help the HR department and streamline the entire process. And while some of these technologies have turned out to be quite helpful , such as job platforms that connect employers and job seekers, others are a constant pain for both recruiters and applicants. Online job application questionnaires are often stiff and redundant and do notlage help any of the parties involved. For example, there is no real need to elaborate on your tasks and duties at your previous job, if you have already mentioned you have worked as a school teacher. Any recruiter should be able to tell what your tasks were if you taught English for high school students, but despite that, most applicant tracking systems (ATS) require an answer that is already obvious. Instead, they should be focusing more on your accomplishments and skills, in reservierung to successfully determine the real difference between qualified and underqualified applicants. The recruiting process has been dehumanized and automated in a way that has become inefficient. We focus more on intimidating and discouraging candidates by using inefficient technologies and making them go through pages of questions that are not always relevant in the hiring process, says Angela Ross, HR Manager at Flash Essay . What most ATS d o is they screen resumes based on certain keywords that match the job description. If your resume does not include those exact same keywords, your application will most definitely not reach the hands of a recruiter . Fortunately, technology can also be used in your advantage this time, as there are multiple websites that specialize in writing resumes or intent letters, to fit the criteria of an ATS. Those tools are specially designed with recruiting technology in mind to help employees get their resumes through the screening process and on the interviewers desk. Applicant tracking systems follow a strict pattern and some resumes, although filled with relevant information, do not pass the system, says Amy Jones, Employment Specialist at WriteLoad . Keep your resume as simple and concise as possible and include information from the job description. Avoid unnecessary information that may not be ATS-friendly.Spelling mistakes can be the end of your resume, as the system cant go pas t them and will not understand that you meant to write time-management instead of time-management. So, make sure you perform multiple spell-checks before submitting your application. If you want to be 100% sure you dont have any mistakes , run your resume through a spell checker after you have finished it, to avoid all possible mistakes. Sometimes, the fear of getting rejected can make you lose focus before even getting to the interview. While sending resumes out to every single job offer you may have heard of is not the best way to approach the situation, neither is giving up and laying in bed all day, hoping to hear from that company you sent your resume to three months ago. You have to make sure you keep your focus and only apply to positions that are suited for you. Otherwise, you might find yourself getting a job that does not bring you any kind of fulfillment. Make a primary goal of your job-hunting process to only apply to positions that truly interest you and fit your s kills. Another mistake that most candidates make after a few rejections is to start overanalyzing the entire process. While recognizing your mistakes and correcting them is part of growing up, constantly going over certain situations and focusing on what went wrong can only work in your detriment. Remind yourself that this is part of the process, learn from it and move on to the next one. Try reaching out to the hiring manager and ask how you can improve. You may get the exact answers you were looking for, said Daniel Bennet, Hiring Manager at EssaySupply . For example, if you applied for a sales position, you might be able to learn that, although your skills were perfect for the job, you might have come out as shy, which is not a good thing for a salesperson.While nobody says you should go looking for an accountant position if you have 7 years of experience as a VP of Marketing, looking for other jobs in the same filed , such as Marketing Officer, or Marketing Manager. You mi ght even want to consider going for a lower position at first and, with your skills, get promoted in no time. There is no point in narrowing your search , just because the job title does not include the word manager. Apply, go to the interview and discuss more with the recruiter when you get there. You have no reason to turn down a job that fits your salary expectations, is close to your home and offers an enjoyable working environment just because it does not have a certain title on the door. Landing a job is not always an easy task and the process can sometimes take out the worst of you. What is important is to analyze the situation, understand that is not always your fault for not getting that callback and focus on moving forward, rather than getting stuck on the last negative response you got.

Create a Dress Code that Fits Your Company
Create a Dress Code that Fits Yur CompanyCreate a Dress Code that Fits Your CompanyCreate a Dress Code that Fits Your Company RossheimWhile the workplace trend to more casual dress continues, todays dress code isnowhere near that simple. One key considerationMillennialsnow 16 to 34 years old and all of legal age to work make different assumptions than their elders about what to wear at work. And while personal style is in, lack of consideration is out.Finally, diversity and its expression from gender fluidity to religious observance is a hot topic across American society particularly your summer dress code policy.With these crosscurrents in mind, here are 11 tips from managers, business owners and a staffing executive for how to create a dress code that conveys your company culture while also making your customers relax and feel respected.Define dress terminology by example. To your company, business casual means Dockers are OK. To abedrngnisher company, business casual requires d ress slacks. So define your terms of dress, especially for workers who only recently came of age.Millennials need definitions of what the dress code means, says Brandi Britton, a district president for staffing firm OfficeTeam. Their professional tends to look more like what we mean by business casual. Spell out your dress code in gender-neutral terms. If your work dress code gets very specific, make reference to articles of clothing, such as shirts and pants, not to gender, advises John Conway, an attorney who represents workers and retirees in labor matters.Discretion need not rule out style. If management has a good relationship with staff, its possible to rule out the provocative without mandating conformity.We had an incident a couple of years ago with a therapist who wore hot pants, says Bob Najjar, co-director of the Psychotherapy Center for Gender and Sexuality at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy in New York City. We couldnt allow that, but we do let people expre ss themselves.Dress up for big clients who might expect it. Whichever way the sartorial winds blow in the American workplace, one guidepost is constant Meetings with big clients often require an attire upgrade. When a major multinational corporation comes in, we dress up a bit, says Richard Laermer, CEO of RLM Public Relations in New York City. I put on a sport coat and nice pants.But dont make clients uncomfortable by overdressing. Some old-school managers think you can never go wrong by suiting up theyre wrong. We dont want a client company to feel like the FBI has raided them, says Britton.Even for virtual meetings, dress with intention. Yes, videoconferences have become ubiquitous. A client could have an office across the street and still wants to FaceTime, says Laermer. But it isnt always OK to come as you are for a Skype meeting. Its safer to wear at least a nice blouse or a button-down shirt even if youre wearing denim where the camera cant see.Give kind guidance to less-exp erienced workers. While the dress code may seem self-explanatory to old hands, the subtleties of dressing up or down at times will elude newer or younger workers. Sometimes when a client comes in, a junior executive wears a suit and tie, and that cracks me up, says Laermer. A little advice given in private and in advance may be more demonstrative of a culture of respect regardless of seniority.Ask employees to consider their coworkers. Client sensibilities shouldnt be the only driver of your dress code. Last year one of our execs came in wearing a T-shirt, and I had to say no, because it angered other employees, says Laermer.Dont be arbitrary. Your company might get in legal trouble if you say you have no dress code as many smaller enterprises do these days and then nix what an individual chooses to wear on a given day.Employers must give advance notice of the dress code, and enforcement cannot be ad hoc, says Conway. If theres a disagreement, its best to work through it with a de liberative process. Keep in mind that the manner in which you resolve problems will reflect heavily on the culture of your company.Make accommodations for legitimate exceptions. The number one problem in establishing uniform dress code is inflexibility that would allow for accommodation of certain practices such as religious beliefs, says Conway.In EEOC vs. Abercrombie, the Supreme Court ruled against the retailer for declining to hire a woman who wore a head scarf even given the clothing chains rule against head coverings and the fact that the woman did not disclose in her interview that she wore a hijab for religious reasons.Watch your legal exposure. When in doubt, seek legal counsel on your dress code and its enforcement. We sent a guy to work at the front desk of a client, says Britton. He wore a single, long earring, and the client didnt like it. But the legal advice welches that they had to allow it.

Overcome your Sunday scaries  26 tricks to reclaim your weekend
Overcome your Sunday scaries 26 tricks to reclaim your weekendOvercome your Sunday scaries 26 tricks to reclaim your weekendNo matter how much you love your job, you have probably experienced a version of the infamous Sunday scaries.This is the feeling that Sunday, the second day of the precious weekend, doesnt quite belong to you- that from the moment you wake up, the day is a dismal countdown to the dreaded Monday.According to a LinkedIn survey, 80 percent of working professionals have reported experiencing the Sunday scaries. Of those who reported feeling the onset of Sunday scaries, 1 in 3 admitted they have them every week. Why so scared? Among other things, professionals have reported that they experience these weekly frights due to an incoming workload (60 percent), a poor work/life balance (44 percent), and unfinished work from the prior week (39 percent.)Seemingly, the answer to defeating the Sunday scaries would be to change jobs. If you are dreading work on a weekly basis, then surely you are deeply unhappy at your own job.Perhaps, though, the Sunday scaries can be defeated in other, less extreme ways. This year, lets defeat the Sunday scaries for once and for all. We came up with a few ways to put those icky feelings to bed, to reclaim your weekend, and to arrive Monday morning refreshed and ready to go.1. Party lessThink of the worst set of Sunday scaries you have ever experienced- where you were curled up in the fetal position in your bed, unable to get up but also unable to sleep. I can think of some of mine. They all had two things in common- alcohol and late bedtime.Weekends can be a fun time to let go. But let go too much? You can end up paying for that well into mid-week. Seriously. Do that enough and it really starts to take a toll on your mental health, your physical health, your relationships, and, yes, your job.Im not here to preach about your party habits, but next time you have a set of Sunday scaries after a long night of drinking and carousing with your friends, think about it. Is it worth feeling like hot garbage all day, drowning in Gatorade, and soaking in greasy pizza? Is it worth the weird emotional (and intensely physical) duress you go through the day after? Late night parties can often be the culprit in particular cases of nasty Sunday scaries.Our first tip is this party less.This doesnt mean you cant enjoy a margarita (or maybe even two) with your girlfriends on a Saturday night. Be mindful about what your body can handle, how safe youre being, and how you might pay for your decisions in the days to come.2. Exercise over the weekendNow that youre drinking less, go for a run. Hate running? Go for a hike or take a yoga class. In short, do something that gets your heart rate going, makes you feel good, and leaves you feeling refreshed and accomplished.By now, fruchtwein people know that exercising has both physical and mental benefits. Exercise is known to produce endorphins and enkephalins. These hormones are your bodys natural feel-good rewards generated by exercise. In addition, exercise will often get you outside, whether it be for a hike or a run, and in the direct path of some Vitamin D.The old hippocampus is incredibly important to our mental health. Guess what? Exercise has been proven to create new hippocampal neurons - these neurons are involved with memory, emotion regulation, and learning.Give your Fitbit a treat and seize those 10,000 steps3. Go to a museumFeed your brain and soul some art this weekend. Sundays are a great day for an early trip to the museum. According to Attention Restoration Theory, your brain needs to shift mental gears in order to refocus its attention. A great way to do that is to physically remove yourself from your everyday routine.Going to a museum can rest your brain with thoughts of fascination (of seeing something new), get yourself away from your typical surroundings (get out of your apartment), and it typically places you somewhere that ali gns with your tastes and purposes.If you live in a small town, there might be a smaller museum based around your region. Learn something new about where you live - maybe its even where you grew up.If thats not available, consider browsing some of the worlds most amazing museums online. Museums like New Yorks Metropolitan Museum of Art showcase much of their collection (thousands of works of art) online.4. Learn something newLearn something new - or at least start to learn.We are all guilty of saying we will do things - eventually when we have the time. Chances are, if you are wallowing in Sunday scaries, you might have some time to devote to a new craft. Maybe learn how to sew or knit. Or start learning an entirely new language Use easy programs like Duolingo to finally brush up on your high school French.Learning a new skill or a new language is a great way to give yourself purpose. If you use Monday morning to brag about what you learned about this past weekend- well, hey, that s just a great perkSidenote - you can literally learn anything on YouTube.5. Wake up earlyWe are not all morning people, I know.Getting up on the weekday is trial enough for some people. But getting that early bird on the weekend is crucial to taking back your weekend. Try getting up as early as you would on a Monday. Go out for a morning stroll, get a coffee, walk your dog, or go for a run.Sleeping in until 12 p.m. on a Sunday is almost guaranteed to start you off on the wrong foot. By waking earlier than others, you can take advantage of the quieter part of Sunday and still have a whole day to yourself.6. Take a social media hiatusSocial media can be a bummer, especially on the weekends. Have you ever been in bed well into the afternoon scrolling through Instagram? Suddenly, the sun is setting and you are three hours deep in your best friends ex-boyfriends sisters cousins Instagram feed. Can you believe she is in Peru? Didnt she just go to Italy in 2014? How is she so tan already ? She sure uses a lot of filters OMG, get off social media.Seriously, take a day off. Its a wonderful feeling. If you have to delete it from your phone, do it. You can always re-download it tomorrow. Social media is proven to give users feelings of anxiety and loneliness when they use it to compare lives. It can seem especially daunting over the weekend when everyone seems to be doing everything. Well, everyone but you. Ditch Instagram, Twitter, and Co. this week. Go out, do something, and let no evidence hit the internet at all. It can be your little secret.7. Take a hiatus from all screensIf you tried ditching Instagram (and you liked it), consider taking a break from all glowing screens this weekend.Instead, try one of those paper-y things. Theyre kind of like a Netflix binge but without video and they are kind of cool. You know, like Twitter, but longer. Like Instagram, but less pictures of food. A book. Read a book. Do it.8. Have a substance-free weekendRemember how we talked a bout boozes role in Sunday scaries? If alcohol and other substances are playing into your Sunday blues, consider having a fully substance-free weekend.Pay attention to how it makes you feel. Do you feel better? Does it make you feel anxious to socialize without substance? Take note. If you feel like you might have a problem that is bigger than an occasional hangover, consider contacting the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).Know that you are never alone.9. Go for a long walkMaybe this technically counts as exercise, but I wanted to include it anyway. Go for a walk without any real intentions. If you are feeling really crappy, give it five or ten minutes before giving up. Take along some headphones. Queue up your favorite songs, a great podcast, or a new audiobook and go for a walk in your neighborhood.This is one of my favorite ways to decompress. Unlike vigorous exercise, you can walk for a while. I get some of my best thinking done on walks. The be st part? Sometimes, you might leave with the intention of walking for 5 minutes only to return two hours later. Walking is a great way to get outside, get your blood pumping, and work out your thoughts- all while taking in some moving scenery.10. Do (a little) retail therapyDont roll your eyes at me Retail therapy is a cheap (well, hopefully) and easy fix, sometimes. Just like anything, its okay in moderation. Dont blow $500 on a jacket because you feel a little down. Be smart.If youre really dreading going into the office, maybe a slick new Monday outfit will give you a boost of motivation. If youre feeling really down, go for a quick shop. Treat yourself.11. Start a Sunday journalIf youre plagued with negative Sunday thoughts, take some of them to paper.Why are you feeling down? What did you do the night before? What is coming up this week that makes you anxious?By beginning to keep track of these thoughts and putting pen to paper, you can better understand why youre feeling this way.12. MediateHave you ever tried meditation as a way to rid yourself of negative energy? Before you scoff it off, think about it.Meditation has been proven to alter your brains grey matter in as little as eight weeks. What does that mean? Well, your brains grey matter is a major part of your central nervous system. It is associated with processing information and providing nutrients to neurons. Meditations effect on your brains grey matter can improve memory, increase empathy, heighten your sense of self, and relieve stress.So, try a meditation center or pick up a meditation class at your local yoga studio, if they offer it. If youre shy about meditation, thats no problem. There are tons of meditation apps that allow you to try from home.13. Create Sunday night goalsSunday evening can be the worst, especially if youre having a bad case of the scaries. Instead of wallowing in it and counting down the hours until Monday morning, create a list of goals.What do you want to do this we ek? Maybe you want to hit the gym three times, get dinner with a friend you havent seen, and buy a birthday present for your mom. Instead of worrying about all that you may have to do, start your week by carving out me time and organizing your goals - no matter how big or small they may seem.14. Think about your accomplishmentsGive yourself a boost Its always good to take note of what you have accomplished. Many women have experienced some negative self-speak. If you feel like you didnt get enough done last week, change tracksWhat did you accomplish? Even if its something small like making it into work on time every day, note it. Dont be so hard on yourselfIf you think of your accomplishments and youre still unimpressed, consider how you can improve in the coming week.15. Do mid-week thingsGuess what? You have free will all week long. Sure, work can take up a good portion of your day, but its probably not taking up all 24 hours (if it is, maybe its time to start looking for a new j ob.)Skip a night of television in bed and go out. Catch a new movie with a friend or get dinner with your significant other. Dont put so much pressure on the weekend being the only leisure time you have. Get it going on a Tuesday.16. Count your freaking blessingsI recently saw a church sign on the internet. It read, Get rich quick Count your blessings.I dont want to be too preachy here. Sometimes, we all need to take a moment to register how lucky we are, that we have a job to even go to, and that we are in good health.Sometimes, a little mindful gratitude will help you out of a funk. Sometimes it wont - thats ok, too.17. Plan a full SundayWhen youre anticipating some Sunday scaries, plan ahead. Feelings of anxiety and depression usually creep in when your mind is less busy.Purposefully plan a wonderful Sunday that is full of activities you love. Instead of counting down the minutes until Monday morning traffic, distract yourself. See a movie, do some yoga, and get dinner with a fr iend. Basically, take everything on this list and have the busiest, best Sunday ever.18. Clean your houseI need to be in the mood to clean. However, when I am in that mood, I go nuts. Clean the tub and behind the toilet where all that gross dust and dirt accumulates. Dust your moldings and clean out under your bed. Maybe even organize your closet?Doing a deep clean will usually distract you from creeping negative thoughts. Let your favorite podcast or a throwback album accompany you on your cleaning quest. Throw on a pair of headphones and go for a deep clean this Sunday. Your feelings of accomplishment coupled with your sparkling home are almost guaranteed to clear any mood.19. Cook a delicious mealTheres this Greek nachos recipe that I have been promising to make my boyfriend for two years now. They arent even hard to make- Im just that lazy over the weekend.Next time youre facing a Sunday afternoon of dread, consider making a big, delicious meal for yourself- and maybe some frien ds, too.20. Prep your weekGet your stuff together on Sunday.Make the onslaught of the week more palatable by planning your week in advance. This can include preparing lunches for the week, planning what youre going to wear to work (and making sure its all clean), and ensuring that you are ahead of the game before you go to sleep on Sunday evening.21. Front load your FridaysSpeaking of prepping work - if your Sunday scaries are due to a seemingly insurmountable amount of work, then see what you can front load on Friday afternoon. Thats right - instead of counting down the minutes to 5 p.m. on Friday afternoon, stay awhile.Get some work done on Friday afternoon and evening instead of scrambling all of Monday morning. Even if you missed the mark on Friday afternoon, you can soothe your worries by hitting the books on Sunday night.You should not be working around the clock every week. Ebbs and flows of work are normal in any workplace. However, if your job has left you with a regularl y overwhelming workload, you might want to communicate this to a manager or look for a new job altogether.22. Catch up with someoneRemember the good old days? Remember your senior year of college, when you didnt even have your first class until Tuesday afternoon?Instead of sulking in your own memories, use the weekend to catch up with an old friend. Take an afternoon to laugh about college, to share stories from your life as it stands, and maybe even to get some advice from an old friend.23. Get a massageNeed I say more? Get a massage - whenever you can afford to, just do it.24. Hang out with a dog (or cat)Along the saatkorn lines of the massage tip, I think this one is pretty self-explanatory. Unless you are allergic, hang out with a cool dog or a cat. Go for a walk in the park or cuddle up and watch a movie.Studies have shown that when a person pets a friendly dog, blood pressure decreases, breathing becomes more regular and muscle tension relaxes. Im not crying, you are. Go hang out with a dog.25. Call your momWhen I am feeling bummed out, I always call my mom. She makes me feel good and she lifts me up. If you have a person who can do that for you, call her.Sunday Scaries26. Make sure its just the Sunday scariesSometimes, Sunday scaries arent Sunday scaries at all. If you are repeatedly having feelings of depression or anxiety, consider that it might be more than a Sunday occurrence.Almost 18.8 1000000 American adults experience depression each year - its very common so dont feel alone in it. If you feel that your Sunday scaries may be more deeply rooted, speak to someone. Here are some resources to get you startedThis article first appeared on Career Contessa.

Don#8217;t Be Afraid to Say #8220;No#8221;
Don8217t Be Afraid to Say 8220No8221 For manyprofessionals,saying Noat work can be quite difficult. Whether your employer is asking you to stay late, come in early, take on a new project, or help another employee with their own workload, sometimes you feel its impossible to decline even if you really should.Oftentimes, it is just easier to say Yes and hammerout the details later on or stress out privately in your office while you frantically try to figure out how you will get everything done.You have been trained to believe that you must constantly go above and beyondif you want to succeed. While it is true that you have to work hard to achieve greatness, a problem arises when we become so consumed with our work that we are almost literally chained to our desks and phones.Well, fellow professionals, I am here to tell you that it is okay to say No sometimes. In fact, here are three specific situations in whichyou should not only feel comfortable sayi ng No, but obliged to for your own sake and your employers sake1. Your Time Is Maxed Outfruchtwein professionals falselybelieve that their supervisors and coworkers understand every detail of their daily tasks and responsibilities. This is not always the case.Often,people just do not know that you cannot fit another project, assignment, task, or responsibility into your daily schedule.It is okay to explain to your coworkers and supervisors that you just cannot take on another project at this time. Explain that it would be a disservice to an existing project you are working on or that you would not be able to dedicate the necessary focus to the new project that it needs and deserves.2. Your Work/Life Balance IsCrumblingPerhaps you are already a workaholic who is known for always taking on additional responsibilities and projects. However, at some point, you are going tobeginfeelingburned out bythe volume of work you have to do.At the end of the day, you are an individual. You are not defined by your job. If you are beginning to feel resentment toward your organization, coworkers, supervisor, or position because of all the work you have to do, then it is okay to start saying no. You need totake time to regroup and refocus, to concentrateon the aspects of your jobthat bring you happiness. Trust in the fact that your happiness is equally important and beneficial to your employer. Unhappy workers are unproductive workers.3. You Do Not Feel ComfortableSometimes,your employer may ask you to take on a project or additional responsibilities that you just arent comfortable with.Maybe a slacking coworker has fallen behindand you have been tasked withhelping them catch up on their own responsibilities.Ormaybe you do not feel that you have theknowledge and expertise to succeed at a specific project that you are being asked to take on. In these cases, it is okay to explain to your supervisor why you are reluctant to accept the additional burdens they want to distributionspo litik on your shoulders.AlthoughYesshould be your typical answer in a professional environment, there are a few instances where saying No is your best bet. The three discussed here are only a few examples, and Im sure youll come across others in the course of your career.When it is time for you to say No,makesure to keep your explanations concise and be prepared to offer an alternate solution. Its okay not to bite off more than you can chew, but you dont want to come across to your supervisor as lazy or not a team player.Kristina Evans isthe director of HR and recruiting forExactor.

How to Talk Your Boss Into Letting You Have a Flexible Schedule
How to Talk Your Boss Into Letting You Have a Flexible Schedule How to Talk Your Boss Into Letting You Have a Flexible Schedule The way America works is changing fast, but some businesses refuse to accept it. Many companies cling to traditional work models despite countless studies showing the benefits flexible work programs have for both workers and the entities for which they work for.In these cases, its up to the employee to convince management of the value of flexible work. When the company completely lacks a flexible work policy, this can be easier said than done. Luckily, a recently releasedfact sheetfrom flexible work advocacy group 1 Million for Work Flexibility (1MFWF) offers a step-by-step guide to drafting a flexible work proposal for your supervisor.The Reasons for Flexible WorkTherbeie are many reasons an employee may decide they would be better off with a flexible schedule, but its important to focus a proposal on the benefits for the business.Employees are typically driven to ask for work flexibility for a personal reason, often in response to a personal crisis or dramatic change a sick loved-one, a personal health issue, a move, a pregnancy, says Emma Plumb, director of 1MFWF. If you havent thought through the details, youre likely to emphasize those personal reasons for needing flex in your proposal, which isnt going to help you make your case.Before rushing into your bosss office to beg for flexible hours or telecommuting options, you need to get your proverbial ducks in a row. According to Plumb, its important to focus your proposal on thefollowing information- Identify exactly what schriftart of flexibility makes the most sense for both you and your job requirements.- Understand the landscape at your company and establish whether theres precedent for your case.- Delineate how you will continue to communicate and collaborate with your boss and colleagues.- Plan for a trial period.- Choose a time to discuss the issue when your boss will be m ost receptive.- Showcase how flexibility is a win-win for employers and employees. Emphasize that its not a perk or an accommodation, but rather a strategy for improving performance and productivity.The key to winning flexible work isto show your boss how the proposed plan will positively impact not only the company, but also the manager themselves.Bosses fear that flex will end up meaning mora work for them, Plumb explains. They worry that an employee they cant see wont get their work done, or that flexible schedules will be difficult to manage. Its key to emphasize all the ways that flex makes good business sense and will make things better and easier for them.Need help formulating a few convincing reasons why flex is a good idea? Plumb has some suggestionsFlex will help you do your own job more effectively. That might be because youll be more engaged, healthier, and/or because youll have less stress and be better able to focus - or all of the above.Reducing or eliminating your c ommute will allow you to be more prompt or more available during times when youd otherwise be in transit.Its likely youll take fewer sick days, and be more available overall. Youll also be better positioned to continue working in a weather disaster like a snowstorm or some other unforeseen emergency.Because of that increased availability, you may even be able to take on additional responsibilities.If applicable, mention the cost savings that could come from remote work (less real estate, less equipment usage).Point out successful examples of flex in action. If theres a colleague or another team working flexibly at your company, all the better.The Impossible BossWhat about those bosses who are practically guaranteed to shoot down a flexible work proposal on sight? Employees working for organizations with no flexible work precedent or an extreme dedication to traditional work models are likely to face heavy pushback, but that doesnt mean they should give up all hope of progress.If a c ompany doesnt have any precedent for allowing flex, that may just be because theyre used to doing business a certain way and no one has spoken up yet about how things could improve, Plumb says. If a company has denied previous requests, its possible thats because the requests didnt emphasize the business case strongly enough or at all. You may be better at making the case than anyone else before you, or you may speak to the right person with whom no one else has discussed this issue before. Its certainly worth making the attempt.Even if a boss says no, that doesnt have to be the end of your dream of better work/life balance. Plumb herself has experienced hitting a brick wall with flex requests. When her high-ups repeatedly turned her proposals down, she decided to take a more drastic step.At that point, I had to evaluate my own priorities very carefully, and I realized that flex was so important to me that I needed change to happen or I would quit my job, she says. Once I made that decision, I felt comfortable elevating the conversation all the way up to the president of the organization. After meeting with him and getting stymied yet again, I knew Id exhausted all my options, and I handed in my notice and moved on.If a boss says no on the first try, wait awhile and try again. Plumb kept at it for two years before deciding it was time to leave. Ultimately, of course, the goal is not to quit your job, but to change it.
